Abby is now 5 and we are having so many trouble with the school district and their lack of knowledge in apraxia. They can only tell me what she is not doing in her class without offering what their plan is to help her get to those goals. They are not active in learning about her disorder at all. We have even offered to pay for a conferance for them but they have refused. We are now looking for a school that will be able to help her. Good luck with your journey and if I may offer you some advice....be strong because you are your childs advocate for years to come.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6447892187739221541.post-33976821738426923882009-09-30T20:57:38.362-04:002009-09-30T20:57:38.362-04:00Wow-what a story and I wish you all the best. I totally hear you-my son is going to be 4 in January and the struggles and frustrations he faces every day just to try to attempt to say a word breaks my heart. I am presently appealing insurance as they deny him coverage of private speech during the school yr. It is ridiculous. It is not fair to him. It is a long story-but I truly feel for you and wish you all the best. Please keep us all posted.Connienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6447892187739221541.post-84465983864981939872009-08-18T10:10:56.349-04:002009-08-18T10:10:56.349-04:00I know Natalee personally and can say that she is ...I know Natalee personally and can say that she is absolutely the best parent for this child. Can't you just see the focused intelligence and emotion she devotes to helping her daughter? Natalee has been an inspiration to me and other parents as someone who recognizes her role as the real expert on her own child. I have the utmost confidence that Natalee will help Maddie find the best possible route to propel her through this life, and someday Natalee will be using this experience to help more parents like herself -- but not until after she gets a good, long vacation!Jolynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15511682180313702603noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6447892187739221541.post-79785117940127233222009-08-02T10:32:03.491-04:002009-08-02T10:32:03.491-04:00I am a mother of an 18 year old son who was diagno...I am a mother of an 18 year old son who was diagnosed at the age of 4 with Apraxia. His speech was almost non-existant. At the age of 9 it was suggested I put him in a "special" school from a "parent advocate" which I did not as I am my childs biggest advocate and know what is best for him. Due to the Apraxia not only was his speech a problem but he also has difficulty writing. He graduated from middle school with honors. He just graduated from high school in the top of his class, was the Executive Producer of his schools tv channel, received a full academic scholarship to college...I could go on and on. He has a normal teen-age life. It will always be an issue but he just works harder at things. Your child will learn differently but she can learn and excel. All the dreams that your family have for her can come true.

Good Luck.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6447892187739221541.post-80743081096625770992009-07-08T11:07:40.611-04:002009-07-08T11:07:40.611-04:00Thanks to this post, I've started saying "...Thanks to this post, I've started saying "speech disorder" instead of "speech delay." This was after it was determined that she was not autistic but before we knew about the apraxia. After 4 years of intensive therapy, homework and a lot of praying, Allison's speech at age 6 is age appropriate. She will be in mainstream 1st grade in the Fall. Her academics are at least age appropriate. She is a social and enthusiastic child. Her final struggle is with fine motor skills. I am telling you this so that you can keep the faith. There are many apraxia success stories!Susannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6447892187739221541.post-60114020778775022912009-07-06T10:20:43.288-04:002009-07-06T10:20:43.288-04:00You sound (like we feel) alone navigating an unfam...You sound (like we feel) alone navigating an unfamiliar ground.
